The Radio Of Hope: After Tsunami 3.11 2012
Plot Synopsis
On March 11, 2011, about two months after the Great East Japan Earthquake, an emergency radio station FM Minasan opens in the town of Minamisanriku on the Miyagi coast. The booth is set up in a corridor in the town's sports hall, which is also used as the evacuation centre. The staff is nine men and women from the town, including Kudo, an ex-corporate employee, and Izumi, an ex-truck driver who is also a single parent. All of them are disaster victims themselves and have no experience in broadcasting. Despite endless problems, the staff keeps broadcasting every day, fueled by their wish to bring smiles to as many people as possible through the radio. Meanwhile, there is a keen woman listener named Sachiko Hoshi. She lives alone in temporary accommodation. Both her daughter and granddaughter got swept away by the tsunami and remain missing. Reconstruction of the town continues day by day but there are many residents who are still unable to move forward. Then March 31 comes when the staff is dismissed. Each of the nine members of the FM Minasan staff starts walking on their own path with smiles of many people and fond memories from the past 10 months.
